A library that works when nothing else does. One is the household unit: a complete reference library on a device the size of a deck of cards, with its own Wi-Fi, that runs off any USB power source and serves up to twenty phones at once.

How it works

Plug it into a wall outlet, a car charger or a USB power bank. It creates its own Wi-Fi network. Join it from any phone, tablet or laptop, the same way you join home Wi-Fi, and the library's home page opens with one search box across everything on the device. There is no internet connection, no app to install, no account and no subscription, ever.

The home screen's Right now panel puts bleeding, CPR, water, shelter, hypothermia and poisoning one tap away. The filesystem is read-only, so pulling the plug mid-use does no harm.

What's on it

  • English Wikipedia, complete, with images: more than six million articles
  • Stack Exchange communities on DIY, electronics, outdoors, gardening, medicine and amateur radio
  • Street and topographic maps of North America, searchable by place name, no GPS data service required
  • U.S. preparedness and medical documents from FEMA, the CDC, USDA, NOAA and USGS, plus the Army survival and first-aid manuals
  • About 1,200 public-domain books, cleanly typeset
  • Emergency reference packs on post-disaster response, medicine, water, knots and food preparation
  • The Blackout field guides: first aid, water, food storage, communications and home security, written for this device

Every unit ships sealed with the current library deposit, dated on the box. Updates are available on a USB stick.
